Rules
Tennis
Facilities- The League rents facilities from the City as well as private facilities in order to provide our leagues. Please respect the facilities so we can continue using them. If we lose our permit for any reason then the season is over.
- NO MARKING SHOES OR SHOES THAT SCUFF
- LEAVE THE COURT THE WAY YOU FOUND IT
- Please be respectful of the neighbours, homeowners and surrounding community
- If there are any issues with one of the neighbours, please be courteous and polite, and then report any issues to the Regina Rec League office
Rosters
- 2 players on the court at one time – at least one must be female
- The League recommends tennis teams of 3-4 to avoid defaulting and for subs.
- A minimum of 1 player must be present to start a tennis game. If the minimum requirement isn’t met the tennis team that is short will lose by default 2-0
- Teams are encouraged to arrive at the court 10 minutes before the posted game time
- A game that starts late will be a short game. Games must end on time. NO EXCEPTIONS
Defaults
- A minimum of 1 player must be present to start a game.
- If the minimum requirement isn’t met the badminton team that is short will lose by default 2-0
- If a team is not ready 10 minutes after the posted game time they will lose by default 2-0. We recommend the game be played regardless if possible.
- If a team loses by default, they will lose their default deposit. If a team loses by default twice in one season, they may be removed from the schedule.
- If both captains agree, the minimum requirement rule can be waived and the game will count towards the standings. This must be decided upon before the game starts and teams cannot change their minds once the game has started.
Objectionable Behaviour
Reckless, aggressive, threatening or unsportsmanlike behaviour will result in being ejected from the game. If this behaviour is repeated, the player may face ejection from the league. If this is a team wide issue, the team may be ejected from the league.
Officiating
- All Leagues are self officiated.
- Captains are responsible to ensure that games start and end on time.
- Team captains should assign someone to be in charge of keeping time and they should let everyone know when there is five minutes remaining in each half.
- If a game starts late, it does not run late. Games are scheduled back to back, so games must end on time.
- Team and players must make their own calls.
- Teams should not be making calls on the other team, but if necessary please do so in a polite and respectful manner.
Captains are responsible for their teammates and their actions. Captains must ensure the rules are followed and that their players understand the rules and sportsmanship expectations of the league
Game Play
- Tennis games will be 55 minutes long.
- Tennis teams will play a best of three match. Whichever team wins two games will get the win and two points.
- Each game will be played to a score of 4 with the winning team needing to win by 2 points with a cap at 7.
- Games will be played using the outside court lines for doubles. (The ball can hit any part of the line for the point to be called in, outside the line and the ball is out.)
- Once the ball is in play, teams continue to rally until the ball has bounced two times inside of the playing area
- A point is scored anytime the ball bounces twice or fails to cross the net.
- The Captains should confirm the score after each match.
- Tennis games will start with a coin toss or Rock/Paper/Scissors to determine which team serves and which side they want to serve from. The start of each following game will see the serve alternate as well as switching sides of play.
- All games are rally point meaning a point is scored whenever the ball bounces twice, regardless of who is serving.
- The server must serve each point from alternative sides on the base line. At no point must the server’s feet move in front of the baseline on the court prior to hitting their serve.
- If the server fails to get their first serve in they may take advantage of a second serve. If they again fail to get their second serve in then a double fault will be called and the point lost.
- If the server clips the net but the ball goes in the service area still then let is called and they get to take that serve again without penalty. If the ball hits the net and fails to go in the service area then out is called and they lose that serve.
- The receiver may stand where they wish upon receipt of the serve. If the ball is struck without the serve bouncing then the server will receive the point.
- A player loses a point if they fail to return the ball in either the correct areas on the court, hits the net and doesn’t go into opponent’s area or fails to return the ball before it bounces twice in their half.
- The ball must bounce once inside of the two inner lines of the court.
- If a player touches the net, distracts his opponent or impedes in anyway then they automatically lose the point.
- Players are not allowed to cross the net to make contact with the ball. Doing so will result in a point scored for their opponent
Playoffs
- All teams will get two playoff games, regardless of where they finish in the standings or the score of their first playoff game
- A tie in the playoffs will be played by a sudden death game.
- Once there is less than 10 minutes left a new game should not be started. If the game does not finish in the allotted time then the game is over and the score will stand as is. For example, if time runs out and a game has a score of 7-5 then the team with 7 will win.
- If the last game played results in a tied match then there will be a sudden death match to 5 points to determine the winner.
Alcohol Consumption
- The league and the city does not allow any open alcohol at any public venue.
- Any player or team found to be under the influence of alcohol, or other controlled substance, will be automatically ejected from the league wihtout refund.
- Any and all fines will be the responsibility of the teams. Teams will lose every scheduled game and will not be scheduled any other games until all fines are paid.
Weather
- Because the season is short and field availability is limited, rescheduling games is very difficult.
- If it is raining prior to your game, teams are to show up at the field regardless and wait 15 minutes for the rain to stop. If the rain does not stop and it is raining too hard to play, the two captains are to agree on a day to reschedule
- If it has been raining for a prolonged period of time, the fields will probably not be open and you may not want to bother showing up, but out of respect you should contact the opposing team captain.
- If it begins to rain after you started the game. If you can play though it you should do so. It is up to the captains to decide if the game cannot continue. After half time the game will not be rescheduled and the leading team after half will be declared the winner.
- If you do not contact the other team to let them know you are not going to make it and they show up then it will count as a default to your team. If the fields are open games should take place and will not be made up.
To be sure the fields are closed check:
- The Weather Closure Icon on our website
- The City of Regina weather hotline @777-7484
- These should be used as a guide as they are not updated past a certain time of day and conditions can improve or change very fast.
Rescheduling
- The Rec League will not reschedule games for any other reason than weather. Should you cancel your game you will lose by default.
- We will make up rained out games but it is the captain’s responsibility to discuss with the opponent when a suitable day/time to make up will be. We do have fields on many days so games can be made up on any of these days but both captains must agree.
- Once a date and time have been agreed upon the league should be notified and then we will schedule your game on an available field.
- All games must be made up prior to the final regular season game. If they are not made up before the final game then the score will not count towards the standings.
Sportsmanship
This is a Rec League and we expect all players and teams to have a fun first attitude. To help enforce this style of play we ask all teams to report the sportsmanship rating of the opposing team after every game.
2 – Good, fun spirited team, respected their opposition and made the game enjoyable
1 – Was not unsportsmanlike, but didn’t go out of their way to make the game enjoyable.
0 – Was not a fun team to play. They made the game less enjoyable and did not respect the opposition
If a team gets two 0 ratings in one season the league will decide whether the team is fit for this league and may remove them from the schedule.
Scores
- Captains are responsible for sending scores and sportsmanship rating within 24 hours of games
- Captains should confirm each other’s scores throughout the game.
- If scores are not reported then they will not count towards the standings
- Not reporting score will have a negative impact on your teams sportsmanship rating and standing in the league.
Refunds
Registration fees are fully refundable, minus a $10 administration charge, up to 2 weeks prior to the beginning of the season. After this, the league assumes you have committed and all fees are non-refundable. We require this time frame in order to create teams and to complete scheduling.
